Kamloops This Week - Background
Kamloops This week is a division of Black Press Group Ltd. Black Press, which claims to be the largest privately-held newspaper chain in Canada with over 150 newspapers located in BC, Alberta, Hawaii, Ohio, Oregon, Washington state. The majority owner is CEO David Black (no relation to Conrad), while the remainder (19.4 per cent) is owned by Torstar Corp (TSX:TS), owner of the Toronto Star, over 100 other daily and community papers, as well as Workopolis, LiveDeal.ca, Harlequin Enterprises (yes, that Harlequin), and a 20 per cent interest in CTVglobemedia Inc. While Black Press is a private company and so does not disclose revenues, Torstar's own filings indicate that its share generates $1.8 million, suggesting total profit of $9 million on revenue of $500 million in 2006.

Columnists:

- Dale Bass - In addition to her role as Staff Reporter, Dale Bass also writes Street Level, a column that is unabashedly well left of center on pretty well every topic she covers. While I personally tack to the right where Ms. Bass tacks to the left, it's still a treat to receive her pointed commentary free on one's doorstep. We are both parents of special needs children; Dale has been an active and vocal advocate at School Board meetings. Dale's husband Alan Bass teaches in the School of Journalism at Thompson Rivers University. Dale Bass' Street Level current column is reproduced online at her blog here: http://dalebass.blogspot.com, while archives dating back to April 2005 can be accessed here: http://dalebassstreetlevel.blogspot.com.
