Kamloops Media - Background
While the press is an essential stakeholder in any democratic society, each news organization has goals and priorities which coexist with its primary objective of delivering news with accuracy, integrity, and fairness. Our democratic society is also a commercial society, so even publicly-owned news organizations execute their purpose within the context of commercial endeavour; the CBC, for example, addresses this fact in its Journalistic Standards and Practices:
Strong commercial preoccupations condition the society in which the CBC exercises its mandate and its programs quite naturally reflect this aspect of Canada's national life.
The relationship between commerce, content, and viability is critical; news organizations that fail to draw necessary audience volumes often also fail as going concerns. If we turn again to our national public broadcaster, two of its eight Priorities and Strategic Directions address this specific issue:
- Ensure the sustainability of CBC/Radio-Canada's Canadian schedules.
- Demonstrate that CBC/Radio-Canada is a well-managed company and generate cash flow to re-invest in programming.
It is within this reality that news organizations triage events and issues, so as to provide the appropriate depth and breadth of investigation, analysis, space, and placement (e.g. at the top of the broadcast, above the fold, or on the home page of a web site).
Understanding the organizations that deliver your news helps you perform your own independent assessment. For example, I enjoy reading the National Post newspaper... it has some excellent columnists, tremendous design, and delivers a mix of stories that I find appealing. Nevertheless, it is difficult to read an issue without finding multiple typographical errors, errors which have earned the Post's accuracy in other aspects of its reporting (i.e. facts) a degree of skepticism from this reader.
