Kamloops Daily News - Background
Corporate:
- Legal Name: Glacier Ventures
- Operating Name: The Kamloops Daily News
The Kamloops Daily News has a paid daily distribution of 12,397 copies. The newspaper became the only daily serving Kamloops when its competitor - The Kamloops Sentinel - closed up shop in 1987 following a labour dispute. The News also publishes the Kamloops Thompson-Nicol Review (which replaced The Extra in February 2008) to 17,156 non-subscribers on Wednesdays and Fridays.
The Kamloops Daily News is one of more than eighty newspapers run by the Glacier Newspapers Group, which is itself a division of Glacier Ventures International Corp (TSX.GVC). GVC acquired the Kamloops Daily News as part of a transaction that closed February 6, 2006 via which it purchased Hollinger Canadian Newspapers Limited Partnership and other properties from Hollinger International Inc. for $117 million.
Glacier Ventures has some large shareholders, including Madison Venture Corp, with which Glacier appears to be closely related; in addition to having completed a private placement (stock purchase) via which Madison increased its position in Glacier during the summer of 2007, the two companies also apparently share office space.
Glacier Ventures is led by Chairman Sam Grippo and President and CEO Jonathon Kennedy. The company's strong cash position enabled it to embark upon a share buyback in September 2007, a move since which the stock has traded consistently at or above $4 as of today's market close (04-Dec-07). Meanwhile, Glacier has continued to acquire new properties; on November 30 2007 the company announced its affiliate GVIC Communications Corp. had acquired 100% of JuneWarren Publishing Ltd., which calls itself "Canada's Oil & Gas Publisher". This move aligns well with the company's strategy of growth via "... two core segments: 1) the business and professional information sector and 2) the local newspaper and trade information sector."
This past October (2007), the Kamloops Daily News and CFJC TV 7 jointly won the Jack Webster Award for Community Reporting for Seeing Red: The Pine Beetle Epidemic. Recognized contributors from the Kamloops Daily News included: Mel Rothenburger, Susan Duncan, Mike Cornell, Cam Fortems, Robert Koopmans, Jason Hewlett, Michelle Young, Mike Youds, Catherine Litt, Murray Mitchell and Keith Anderson. The Jack Webster Awards recognize "Excellence in British Columbia Journalism".

Editors:
- Mel Rothenburger, Managing Editor, mrothenburger@kamloopsnews.ca, (250) 371-6152
Mr. Rothenburger is the Managing Editor of the Kamloops Daily News. He is a successful local politician who served as the Mayor of Kamloops for two consecutive terms between 1999-2005. His biography while a member of the Thompson Nicola Film Commission (which he helped found) described him as an "accomplished novelist, playwright, screenwriter, journalist and rancher". He was awarded the 2008 Eric Dunning Integrity Award by the B.C. & Yukon Community Newspapers Association. He retired from the Mayor's office and returned to his position with the Kamloops Daily News in 2005, ending a 6-year leave of absence. His return to the editor's desk fueled speculation Mr. Rothenburger was entertaining a run at federal politics, but that outcome has not materialized.
