Josh, that is a great question. Often the people who are already in the industry of interest can be the best resources. Things might be different in radio, but often the direct approach is best; call or email some disk jockeys, and ask them for advice. Over the years various people getting started in the software industry called me to ask for guidance, and I always made the time to speak with them.
Obviously with any job there are skills that you may require before you can get your foot in the door. If you can acquire those skills (and some experience) as a volunteer, you're ahead of the game. Residents of Kamloops have an amazing opportunity to become broadcast volunteers at CFBX (www.thex.ca), our campus and community radio station. My oldest daughter recently began volunteering there, and now broadcasts an hour-long program - The Buffalo Gals - every Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
The station manager, Brant Zwicker, is a fabulous resource; give him a call and get the ball rolling while your motivation is strong.
