What Spring? Here it is Cinco de Mayo in the northern land of cactus and sagebrush, but it still feels like friggin' winter, and with just a week remaining until the provincial election I still don't know who I'm going to vote for. Where has the time gone? And can somebody tell me which friggin' riding I'm in?
How is it that a self-proclaimed politico can be so clued out? Can't be my fault... it's those damn bureaucrats and their newfangled riding boundaries that are to blame!
Both Premier Gordon Campbell and NDP leader Carol James spent time in Kamloops at the outset of the campaign, and the press made much ado of Kamloops' reputation as a bellweather bellwhether bellwether riding. But that reputation may well be at risk if otherwise informed voters like me can't even figure out where to make our votes count. And yes, despite what all those busybody STV advocates tell you, our votes do count (but that's another story).
The electoral boundaries for the two Kamloops ridings in the previous (2005) election were as indicated at right(scale varies between the two images, shared boundaries are highlighted in purple, and arrows indicate the municipality of Kamloops). Click on one of the following links to view the full-size map of the Kamloops or Kamloops-North Thompson riding map prior to the most recent redistribution at Elections BC.
The ridings for this election look considerably different (as below), and even one of the riding names have changed. Today, the Kamloops-South Thompson riding has a significantly more east-west orientation. Meanwhile the Kamloops-North Thompson riding is now essentially due north with the southern perimeter having shifted away from Chase and toward Deadman Creek.
Find Out What Riding You're In
Thankfully, Elections BC has made available a tool to help citizens determine the riding in which they reside and the options at their disposal for voting; just click here to access the tool at the Elections BC web site.
